DETROIT -- In a new blow to this troubled city, a federal corruption probe is looking into the actions of city officials in connection with the awarding of a $47 million waste-disposal contract last year.
The investigation focuses on Synagro Technologies Inc., a Houston-based contractor hired in November to handle sludge from the city's water-treatment plant.
Detroit's two local newspapers, the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News, reported this past week that investigators caught on tape a Synagro executive, James Rosendell, passing cash to the city council president's chief of staff. The papers cited people close to the probe.
