Opponents Lining Up Against Democrats’ Surtax Plan
Sarah Lueck reports on Congress.
Opposition is building to House Democrats’ proposal for a surtax on wealthy people to fund new veterans benefits.
The proposal, part of a war-funding bill up for a House vote Thursday, would impose a 0.5% tax on incomes over $500,000 for individuals and incomes over $1 million for couples. The more than $50 billion over 10 years generated by the tax would be used to expand education benefits for veterans. The proposal is expected to pass the House, but not the Senate.
House Republicans are sharpening their criticism of the plan, saying that 83% of those targeted by the tax are small-business owners who include their business income on their personal tax forms. “American taxpayers know that Washington has a spending problem, not a revenue problem,” said a statement from the office of House Republican Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri.
The Tax Relief Coalition, made up of anti-tax advocates and business groups, sent a letter urging lawmakers to vote against the plan.
Cut me a break! If Opponents? has a college education, your time and my tax-money was wasted. Please learn what makes this country great…it’s the dream that ANYONE can become a $500,000 small business owner. Usually those that do make it do not come from the ranks where you came from!
Democracy is about limiting the growth of the have’s to propel the growth of have nots.
Excuse me, democracy is about the will of the people. Would you be okay if 90% of people voted to execute the other 10%? I didn’t think so, and that is why we don’t have a pure democracy, but instead a constitutional, representative. What you are proposing is that 95% of people be able to vote to steal the property of the other 5% to give to themselves. You sir are a disgusting pig surpassing even Pol Pot.
If you really care about your future, your children’s, and their children’s future then you should read where your taxes are going and to “WHO”… you think! This should be mandatory reading for the 7th grade Econ 101.00001… You think! Wake up before it’s to damn late! Has anyone out there ever read your Tax Payer Bill of Rights… not once out of 1000’s of pages does it mention once that you have the right to ask your government “WHERE”… your tax payer dollars are actually going and to “WHO” and for “WHAT” and “WHEN”… they are going to be spending it… You think! I sure in the hell didn’t sign up to bail out Bear Stearns and the other Investment Banks… did you… Hum?
Sadly, a lot of Americans are buying into the give me something, and make my neighbor pay for it, mentality.
I agree with the surtax, but the revenue should be used for paying down the war debt. Otherwise, it’s just the same tax, spend, and inflation cycle.
Once again those representatives of the 60% of our population that pays a combined 0.6% of the federal taxes vote to give 0.5% additional taxes out of the pockets of small business. The 0.2% surtax for FUTA is still in place after three decades of high employment. No wonder business has abandoned the USA in the past three decades. We are run by liberal idiots.
We should be taxing everyone who benefits from the sacrifices of our veterans…i.e. everyone.
I’m no friend to the uber wealthy, but fair is fair.
Disclaimer: I don’t agree with Republican tax breaks to the wealthy, or fiat spending programs by the Democrats. I believe that a balanced budget should be constitutional.
