The Hobbies or Vices That Get You Through the Day
I have a secret vice. A vice that helps me unwind and cope with the stresses of my daily juggle. A vice that might draw mockery — or at least some serious teasing — from colleagues and friends if they knew.
Well, now everyone will know: I like soap operas. In fact, I’ve been watching one of them — “As the World Turns” — regularly for decades. I watched it with my mother when I was a kid, and started taping it when VCRs became popular. To this day, I look forward to relaxing on the weekends with a week’s worth of taped “stories.” It’s a relief to forget about office politics and the fate of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for a just a little while. Passively soaking in the fictitious dramas of Oakdale, Ill., gives my brain a much-needed rest.
Many of us have little crutches that help us cope and that we’d be hard-pressed to give up. Some are classic: a glass of wine with dinner, fantasy baseball or maybe knitting. And some can be a little embarrassing.
Readers, what are the hobbies or vices that help you cope with modern life? Trashy novels, cigar smoking, horoscopes? Do you collect international beer cans, or go on a Nintendo bender on the weekends? What “mother’s little helper” gets you through the day?

Ummm, this blog?
this blog is my vice
This blog - and the occasional adult beverage. Sometimes I do both at the same time :-P
Sending/receiving email to/from friends/family, reading this blog and a few others and having a glass of wine at dinner. And on particularly crazy juggle days (i.e., when you’ve got a major make-or-break-you work deadline, an unexpectedly sick kid, and a messy house to clean before evening visitors crammed all into the same day), I sometimes fall prey to my nastiest, most embarassing habit - social smoking.
I’m completely addicted to the Diary of He and the Diary of E on Redbook online. I’ve been reading them since college and still do years later! Talk about trashy ’soaps’…completely embarassing…
Sweet, sweet crack cocaine.
A few blogs during the workday and after hours a recently acquired vice, collecting vintage watches. Of course, I don’t consider a lifelong addiction to Red Sox baseball a vice.
Well, this blog, and DVR’d episodes of Friends. Why, I don’t know, but it helps. And margaritas and chips & salsa on date night.
Stefanie, although I no longer watch it, I used to watch As the World Turns — I remember coming home from kindergarten and watching while my mom ironed! I think I watched it up through high school. I was amazed the other day when it was on at the gym and some of the same characters were still there. They must have great plastic surgeons.
Without question, this blog!
This blog for sure! Also tabloids(totally shameful), Real Simple, mani/pedis, wish I could be one of those ppl who dealt w/ stress by exercising.
This blog. Without a doubt.
Swimming. I can’t hear “Mommeeeee” with water in my ears.
Church (everyone has to be quiet!) and my 60 minute AM workout. I don’t care what I have to do to make it happen - give me my time outdoors.
Chick Lit. And milkshakes. (How embarrassing!)
This blog, Bravo TV reality shows (Project Runway & Top Chef) and detective/murder mysteries.
“All My Children” will forever by my guilty pleasure, thanks to TiVo. I’ve been watching it my whole life w/ my mom, who suddenly died when I was eight-months pregnant w/ my first child/her first grandchild. We always used to watch it “together” two states apart, and I still find myself commenting out loud to her about it, assuming of course they get network TV in heaven :)
Hmmm probably wouldn’t call them vices, maybe more like guilty pleasures, of which I have many: Hollywood gossip, TV shows include Jon & Kate Plus 8 and Life in the Fab Lane (Kimora the Working Mom but with lots and lots of money and help - lucky her!). I always check out the Juggle in the morning and Mommy Poppins blog (http://www.mommypoppins.com/) for cheap/free stuff to do in NY.
Fantasy sports
Definitely this blog. (and others about two other vices - running and knitting. Strangely some blogs combine both which means I am not the only runner who knits).
Hour long weekly dramas (BF calls them soap operas) - Army Wives, Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters.
Most embarrassing vice has to be the teen dramas - The OC and its NY spawn Gossip Girl. I.can.not.explain.it. My friends just nod and smile.
My cell phone has this game called Bubble Breaker…
I look forward to this blog each morning. I am usually one of the first to respond, but have been so busy from the time I stepped in(5am)..til now.. I love this blog..it helps me with my stess levels.
The usual-this blog, red wine w/ dinner. B/4 going back to grad school I enjoyed my middle eastern dancing. Now it’s computer maghong. I’m hoping I can eventually play with my in-laws. Oh, if I can ever print out all those digital pics my DH uploads, I would be scrapbooking.
Reading Us Weekly magazine and Perez Hilton’s blog, swimming, yoga, gym, reading fiction on my commute
Emperors Club VIP, until they got shut down :(
WSJ online + this blog. Also, I cannot settle down to work in the morning without my coffee cup containing something warm - latte, tea, whatever. Being a natural morning person, I don’t need the caffeine (I’ve been up since 5:30 and get to work at 8), but I can’t begin to focus on work until I have that warm drink in my hand and have at least perused the WSJ front page and seen what the Juggle topics for the day are. Oh, and People magazine when I’m on a plane trip :-)
I get an odd pleasure out of throwing away the items that my slob office mates leave in the fridge. Six month old yogurt? Away you go. Apparently no one else has the guts to do it, so the joy is mine all mine.
Confession: sometimes I get very frustrated if the juggle topics are posted late- I need that vice!
I’m so glad to see others with a soap opera vice - I’ve watched All My Children forever and it makes the time on the treadmill fly by when I’ve got them tivo’d. I also admit to wasting a lot of time on Facebook games.
Used to be this blog before the topics progressively became more and more inane.
This blog and an obscure, now canceled, TV series on Fox called “Arrested Development.” Watching the three seasons’ worth of episodes over and over is definitely a vice, but it was the greatest TV show EVER! (And yes, I’m obviously a very boring person.)
My a.m. exercise which right now is pilates. I need it so badly I wake up at 4:20 a.m. to fit it into my juggle. Also, a piece of dark chocolate after lunch (at my desk) and the occasional glass of red wine in the evening. As for TV, used to watch Sex and the City religiously. Now it’s Dateline and 48 Hrs Mystery for some odd reason.
New Mom - I KNOW! Sometimes they don’t get around to it till like 11:30ET.
Sometimes, when I’m in long meetings, I can’t wait to get back to my desk to read all the new comments.
So glad to know I’m not alone, I must refresh every minutes, my productivity suffers!
Definitely this blog, and Facebook.
Guitar Hero and Rockband…probably the closest I’ll ever get to the real thing.
Watching “What not to Wear” and “So you think you can dance”.
ooohhhh….Guitar Hero. A friend invited me over to show me the dark side. On the way home, I almost bought a tv and Wii so I could play it.
This blog, BIG TIME, and also the comments on Chicago Tribune (which can be ridiculously sublime, particularly on IL politicians), and occasionally The Economist blogs, which are more high-brow but have better grammar. But probably my most eclectic vice (along with DH) is sitting on our balcony with a beverage giving scores out of 10 for parallel parking in the street below. Puerile, but soothing in a supercilious sort of way.
Knitting/crocheting. But, I have to have the TV on at the same time (always multitasking — it’s a wonder I ever wind down). Favorite guilty pleasures on TV are Burn Notice, The Closer, Battlestar Gallactica, Ghost Hunters (for shame!), Robin Hood (BBC) and Grey’s Anatomy (although season 4 was lame). A glass of wine. And, of course, chocolate. Starbucks Mocha Lite Frappuccinos are also a fun indulgence. (Like having the “lite” version actually helps!)
This blog, Popsugar and Perez Hilton (as close to a soap opera as it gets), and Facebook.
I keep this blog site open all day long and refresh periodically. I love reading the comments. I also crack up when the subject changes.
Many times I think…OMIGOD..I can’t wait to hear what “A son” has to say about this..or how “boston Lawyer” will respond to this stupid comment…. I like all the regulars that keep their name the same and I have my own ideas of how each person looks…
I love this blog, but since it’s hosted by the WSJ, its not really embarrassing. I would just die if someone I know professionally got ahold of my iPod–I love cheesy pop music. Early Britney Spears, Back Street Boys, Miley Cyrus, Big & Rich, etc. I also sing very loudly and very poorly to my music when I’m in the car. My husband is embarrassed; My kids think its cool.
DopeyMummy: that’s not fair! You’re British (English?) aren’t you? - you were taught to parallel park - they know no better here. Having finally accepted the reality that I live here, I just did my test to get my MA license. I drove round a block! It took three minutes! I am now much, much more scared of Boston drivers.
I look nothing like that.
I have been reading this blog for about a year but only recently started commenting. All you regulars, A Son, Gay Dad, Allboys, kaleburg, etc, have almost celebrity status in my mind because I’ve heard so much about your lives!
LOL Boston Lawyer..don’t worry..everyone looks great
I don’t consider this blog a vice - more like a productivity black hole.
-
My vices: 1. gofugyourself.com for all of the dish relating to celebrity fashion disasters 2. makeup, specifically nail polish, especially discontinued nail polish. I’ll change a mani from a work color to a blood red just to go out to dinner.
3. Top Chef
Thus proving my point. Often, when I am reading through documents in a new case, I develop mental images of the key players. Eventually I meet them and they are always older, fatter, and less well dressed than I had imagined.
Oh, and if you’re looking for a great guilty pleasure - try “Weeds” on Showtime.
The point is it’s truly stress releasing. It gives a sense of relief to know you all will be here every morning to make me think, laugh or roll my eyes. You ALL ROCK
Aisling: Yes, I’m ex-Brit, so I was taught to parallel park, but really, the number of 2s and 3s we give out is horrifying, and inexusable. We also see quite a lot of car accidents, but that’s not very soothing.
Boston Lawyer to Gay Dad: Well, I’m usually pretty scruffy, haven’t had a good hair day in, oh, about 7 years, and 2 years after DD was born still haven’t figured out how to avoid stains from DD’s well-aimed food-flinging landing right on my shirt, and have, quite frankly, given up trying.
This blog is my weakness, it does sit open all day & continually refresh.
I also watch an embarrassing amount of TV (thanks to DVR) & movies.
theskinnywebsite.com, to see the celebs at worst & best, as I find it comforting that everyone has cellulite
I also am addicted to Pop candy at USA.com, great blog of all things entertainment.
And to the poster above you are not the only one watching Gossip Girl, doesn’t get much more escapist than that.
Other than this blog? I probably spend a great deal more mental energy than is warranted on deciding what elaborate cocktail to put together of an evening. (The basil mojito was a winner. I thought the nectarine-mint blended drink was great but my husband found it too subtle for his needs on that particular evening.) I think it’s side effect of how long it takes (and how much squabbling I have to hear) to get all the kids picked up and home and going on some non-destructive activity.
Oh, and I read my kids’ books, and it’s not just so that I can be a good mom and know what they’re reading. I got Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules for my son because I wanted to read it, and I had to really restrain myself from reading it before I gave it to him. (In my defense, those books are hilarious.)
Also to get through this summer of abysmal tv choices (I do not watch any reality shows except for Top Chef)
Let me recommend the series MI-5 on DVD, (in Englnd was called Spooks), I’ve been getting the DVD’s through netflix.
It’s a fantastic series for all those who enjoy a good spy show, great cast, and very well done.
It’s “brilliant”, as they would say acros the pond…
Diet Coke, happy hours, potato chips, food blogs
I also love watching the Tour de France, just to see who’s going to test positive next, but I generally don’t have the patience to watch more than the last 30 minutes.
When you were late this morning I feared your Asian vacation had started and we wouldn’t hear from you for a month.
**
I sometimes have this image of us all meeting at a bar and knowing so much and yet so little about each other. And having a good laugh about what everyone actually looks like.
**
I tried to quit once- I was back a few days later!
Note to self: figure out where DopeyMummy lives, then never try to parallel park anywhere near her. I’ll walk the extra 1/4 or 1/2 mile to avoid it-as bad as I am, the time factor is probably a push.
.
As for vices, heroin is starting to look mighty tempting. Really, though, finding something I can lose myself in-a good sporting event, book, movie, video game, or conversation.
To Bob’s My Uncle: We don’t actually hold up score cards or anything that crass, although we have chuckled quite loud on a few occasions, and once we burst into a spontaneous round of applause for 10 minutes of sheer entertainment.
Honolulu at 2:52 - I must respectfully disagree (which is to say, you are way off this time); it is NOT a waste of mental energy to plan the perfect cocktail. You have children.
Most days, books. About once a month I try to get a cup of tea at a local shop and spend some time people watching.
Hmmm. . . well, I appreciate the support, CL, but I’m still not convinced that normal people do so much *research* in the subject of cocktails. I subscribe to Imbibe, I read a bunch of cocktail blogs, I printed out all those NYT blender cocktail recipes from the other week, I pester the local liquor stores for Punt e Mes and falernum. I don’t think I can blame the kids for all that, although I can optimistically hope that it sets them a good example for how to really keep on top of a subject.
I have three different containers of diet pepsi on my desk right now.
Oh, who am I kidding. The only thing that really qualifies as a vice is the imaginary 1-pound bag of peanut M&Ms that I wish I had.
Honestly, though, Diet Coke. I’m not a coffee drinker, and used to struggle through to lunchtime without it. Now, though, I can’t do without my morning constitutional-one can, not opened until about halfway through the commute.
Thanks for the tips on other blogs.
I love this blog, have been reading it forever and always wait on comments from the Regulars. It often helps me through the day.
I am just too paranoid about posting. Weird, I know.
This blog, a few other parent blogs (mainly on babble.com), celebrity gossip at dlisted.com, and trashy reality shows like Rock of Love.
Oh no you di’int BOO. you did not just bring up m&ms……
Boo: Sorry to say, but your imaginary bag of candy doesn’t count. I suggest that you rectify your lack of a vice by running to CVS and buying a real bag of M&Ms. It’s Friday afternoon, after all.
In fact, buy 3–one for you, one for me, and one for Gay Dad. : )
This blog, and a few others. Talk radio – Rush & Imus. It embarrasses my teenager to no end.
I just checked out theskinnywebsite.com; that was fun.
Is it weird to enjoy embarrassing your kids? I get a sick pleasure in it…
I can pass up the M&Ms but have a real love/hate relationship with donuts. I love it when people bring them into work but hate it at the same time because I can never say no to one.
This blog, www.jigzone.com, spider solitaire and The Sims (at least I can control SOMEONE’S life).
Young and the Restless. Began watching with my grandmother in the early 80s, taped it on a VCR for years and now I DVR it everyday. I love the fact that some of the actors on this soap have been on for decades. It is a great way to unwind after work.
People’s Court. I TIVO them and watch them before I fall alseep each night.
I had to stop playing the SIMS a few years back and get rid of all of my disks …. kept me up until 4am on more nights than I’d like to admit!
The Tudors: I enjoy the finding the gratuitous historical errors while looking at the lavish settings.
I look forward to this blog every day when I get into work, and hit refresh periodically throughout the day (glad to learn I’m not the only one!). Other vices: hitting the snooze button (a lot), Seinfeld reruns that I’ve seen a hundred times but still laugh at, and pizza & beer (a heavenly combo). I also love to run and do yoga, but I don’t consider those vices.
World of Warcraft — Level 70 priest and mage, Empire of Lost Souls, Kilrogg
While at work - definitley this blog.
After work - DVR’d episodes of General Hospital, SYTYCD and Facebook!
Masterpiece Theater and lurking on this blog.
this blog (during the day), glass of wine at night, watching tapings of “Desparate Housewives”, “Brothers & Sisters” and “Clean House” early on the weekends (before the kiddos wake up). Also liked the short run of “Lipstick Jungle” and “Cashmere Mafia”.
I spend my lunchtime reading this blog (since most of you have been posting for awhile before my lunchtime there’s always a lot to read!)
And boo–I keep a bag of m&m’s in my desk. Everyday around 2 pm a handful is a necessity to get me through the afternoon.
Internet surfing, blogging.
Obviously - this blog. I also love The Sims, reading Science Fiction by the truck load…hmm for TV - I watch Battlestar Glactica too…as well, as Grey’s and Dseperate Housewives and ER. Woah - I am a huge nerd.
Harelquin romanaces. As a consultant and pharmaceutical analyst. I am know for to be pragmatical, logical, objective and blunt, So peope would be shocked to know i’ve been reading romance novels since high school. Now that you can down load books onto your laptop or smart phone. I never have to woory about a paper back falling out of my bag
I like talking about vices with a blog name like mine. For me the vices/guilty pleasures are: micro-brews, my dog, and Law & Order: SVU. (I’m also crazy about So You Think You Can Dance but given my work and education I like to call it “research”.) And this blog is a “productivity black hole” for me as well. (Well put Yoshi.)
without a doubt - this blog. but I wouldnt call it a “vice”. It helps confirm that I am not the only one out there who can spend hours browsing through archived juggle posts.
Numerous tv shows (most embarassing being ANTM, Gossip Girl, and Top Chef), GoFugYourself.com, The Sims, Facebook, and puzzles/card games, like Han-Ji and about 30 types of Solitaire installed on my computer (and usually I’m trying to do at least two of these things at once)
The Juggle, People.com (gossip/trash that’s happy to admit it’s trash) and Hello.com (gossip/trash with a snobby edge). The Juggle can be fascinating and really enriching, but the other two usually leave me feeling as if I overdosed on something sweet and sickly. They’re addictive, though.
DopeyMummy - what’s an “ex-Brit”, out of interest? Just wondered as however long I live in France I can’t see myself ever becoming French..
I became a US citizen about 2 years ago after realizing that when I went back to Blighty for a visit, I couldn’t wait to leave and come home again. That sealed it for me. The only things I miss are family, my Mum’s marmalade and loose leaf Twinings tea. Just don’t really “get” it there anymore.
Thanks DM, that’s interesting…It would be nice to be able to say the same thing about living where I do.
Diet coke, white wine, Red sox baseball and Top Chef and loud, loud music (think Kid Rock, Beastie Boys, Guns n roses) when I walk my dog.
Guiding Light has been a part of my daily routine since I was a kid! I DVDR it everyday! LOL I found this blog via a link from a PGP Classic Soaps Blog!
Craigslist and fantasy on line shopping — I look for new furniture. Often buy it, then sell my old stuff on Craigslist too.
DopeyMummy, re the tea — if you can’t find good tea selection locally there are plenty of mail order possibilities. We’re a tea drinking family and our preferred mail order source is Adagio.com, but there are various online tea shops that sell Twinings and various other blends, plus Murchies (the Canadian place) and others that do their own blends. The mail order options are worth looking into if you haven’t already.
Call of Duty 4 on XBOX
Running. Knitting and crocheting. A cup of tea at a local shop. These are your vices. Dear God in heaven, you people are stupefyingly boring.
Wii - that is my release… or hockey, alcohol (I went to grad school to become an alcoholic. I mean no offense to anyone in AA, but it’s the truth).
.
I’m happy with anything that doesn’t make me think.
