Update: Extreme Makeover Home May Be Rescued from Foreclosure
Dawn Wotapka reports:

Reality television truly is a different world: We’ve just learned that the Extreme Makeover home that was set to become nearly as famous a foreclosure as Ed McMahon’s is on track for a last-minute reprieve.
“We are working out a repayment plan with them to help them stay in the home,” said Christine Holevas, a spokesperson for mortgage holder Chase.
The deal is nearing completion, but everything is not “signed and sealed” yet, she added.
Ugh, my mortgage is with Chase. That’s it, I’m refinancing with another bank. Charity is one thing, but not to the undeserving.
let my (idiot) people go…they are too stupid to deserve a free home.
The inside of the house is probably trashed to the point that Chase doesn’t want to deal with the repossession.
Apparently this house is a castle amongst very modest houses so Chase would take a bath on it anyway. Might as well try to keep the existing folks in it.
This is the dumbest story yet on the real estate mess..Better get direct deposit, have the house payment come right out of their checks….
the show should secure the homes they build so idiots like these people stop trying to get something for nothing. Ty and the gang should build homes for the deserving, not the begging with the handicap that they can flaunt to get help. Sad sad sad
Hey, Merrill Lynch had already priced the CDOs at 22 cents on the dollar. This is kind of, sort of, what the “real” home value to current loan value is. As scarry as it sounds, the Wall Street analysts are correct this time around. This also places the house values in line with average income ratio as approximately 3.5 times. Ta-da.
These people deserve to be homeless. When you don’t pay for something with your own hard-earned money, you have no respect for it. Good example of why welfare does not work.
I am with everyone else, these people don’t deserve a second chance. They were given a once in a lifetime deal…hundreds of thousands of people would love a new home. And they wouldn’t put it up for a buisness loan…it is pathetic. ABC needs to screen the receipents of these “free homes” to make sure they don’t something so stupid as to what these people have done.
If I was a volunteer who helped build that house I would be so upset, and to all the people who donated money, etc., etc…..what a waste of time!!!!!
Hey, Is there any one else that has a mortgage with Chase that may need some help? Give them a call…!!!!
I am always amazed that, while the houses are beautiful and the premise is a good one, why on earth do the houses need to be so over the top? Wouldn’t it be better/wiser to build a house more suited to the neighborhoods and incomes in which they reside and use the extra monies to build additional homes for others in need of the same sort of assistance? And why not do like Habitat for Humanity does and require some sweat equity? I for one have never been able to afford my own home and would give anything, sweat equity being the least of it, to be offered such an opportunity.
No one deserves to be convicted by the Judge and Jurors of on-lookers not knowing the full story. I cannot believe how powerful the media is but one thing holds true that a mistake was made by the parents of this family and their children do not have to suffer for such a mistake, nor do they need to be homeless as someone mention in their comments. Why punish them? Everything happens for a reason and we all have been faced with a situation of some sort in our lives. It is how you react to the situation and I pray this family see the blessing that has been laid out for them. All this happen because GOD set forth the plann, it was a Blessing that the Show was able to do such a beautiful thing for a deserving family.
We all come from the same source (GOD) and we as a people need to acknowlegde that no one on this earth is PERFECT. How are we to grow as people if we cannot show compassion for another person and the problems they may be facing regardless of their skin color. Also, second chances are necessary because GOD gives each one of second chances everyday when he allows us to wake up the next morning so that we are able to once again be blessed in His glory. There is no one more deserving of the media’s attention than GOD and how he forgives us when our tongues confess and ask. Remember mistakes are necessary in order to grow.
Harper Family, I pray that you are able to keep the home GOD has allow wonderful heart loving people to build for you. May GOD Bless everyone that reads this message. (I Love you GOD - Trina)
Sad story, but predictable. If your septic tank is leaking back into the house whenever it rains and you don’t repair it, what makes u think those people can hold on to a mansion? Unbelievable the studpidity. And then Chase is bailing them out once again?????
We know the house is going into foreclosure but we don’t know the specifics. The families in need of a new house obviously can’t afford to do it on their own so what makes anyone think they can afford a huge mortgage. I think half of the home payment should be donated and a financial advisor for the family should be a part of the deal to arrange payments so they can continue with their lives and live in the house. Sometimes all people need is hope; the house did that.
It is supposed to be a “win, win” situation, the builders and all involved get free publicity for their business and the home owners get an adequate home their need.
The world is full of vultures and who knows who volunteered to assist that family when they started to fall behind in bills. Do you honestly believe after hearing their story during the building of the house that these folks would deliberately do this to their kids and themselves? I am sure it is the most embarrassing thing for the family right now.
I guess I shouldn’t be upset for the public to be so judgmental; after all the media allowed us to share, sympathize and be a part of these people’s lives so I guess once again we allowed the media to sway our thinking for us.
It is great to know that many folks out their have never made a poor decision in their lives.
Oh yeah, do you think anyone would intentionally disrespect Ty like this….I think not!
Serenity Grace– It’s a TV show! That’s the primary purpose; helping people is just a side effect.
And, frankly, building modest housing at reasonable costs just doesn’t make good TV.
Kathy– The house is GIVEN to them, free and clear. They even got a fund to cover property taxes and maintenance. THEY took out a mortgage they couldn’t afford and blew the $450,000 in cash.
(I think they couldn’t care less about “disrespecting” Ty! But thanks for the laugh…)
i bet the chase marketing department insisted on the deal to stop to the foreclosure. i bet they even will guarantee the mortgage unit the payments for the first year. this is great exposure, well worth the price.
It would be interesting to know what made them think they could run a construction business, but in the end, the show should have paperwork drawn up for each home that prevents any mortgage being taken out on the property. Where is the $250,000 scholarship money?
Again, plenty of nice places to rent (and the number continues to increase) at affordable prices.
There is absolutely NO RUSH to place money down for a debt obligation for a house.
Just wait…
Construction business?!?! they can’t repair their septic system, but they can run a construction business?!?! I bet they bought $465,000 worth of lottery tickets. At least with lottery tickets their odds of coming out ahead would be better than them running a construction company.
I’m glad there is a good chance that the Harpers will get to keep their home. I’m sure it’s a lesson learned. Sorry folks! shows over! no more to see around here. Move it along.
I don’t think we know the whole story. Having worked on one of these show/houses, the terms for each are different depending on what the BUILDER is willing to cover. The builder typically pays for it ALL (tho obviously lenders are used in some situations). In some cases, the old house is torn down, but the mortgage remains and the builders don’t pay that off (tho they did on my project). The house is free and clear, except for some STEEP property taxes, which aren’t always taken care of either.
PS — you mean people don’t deserve what ever kind of house you live in. Not everyone is as smart as you think you are.
I live near this home and see the cars in the drive. These folks used the money to purchase “stuff” and it wasn’t the kind of items that their kids could benefit from…cars don’t really make good investments, especially the kind in this driveway - gas guzzlers & eye poppers! Not to mention the house is so outrageous for the area…no one who could really aford the home would want to live in that area as property values look to be decreasing. I agree that the recipients need to be screened better and that a disability should not be “played” as a trump card. Sorry, no sympathy from me…they need to loose the home and learn how to live within their wage limit!
These people are poor for a good reason. Rather than helping them thru financial means, they need to be encouraged to change their life-style and learn to manage their finances. I wouldn’t be surprise one bit if these folks are in financial trouble again a few years from now.
These people are dumb, but typical of the people who now need the government to bail them out.
I have no sympathy for them or anyone else who over-leveraged themselves to get rich quick.
Sorry no sympathy here either…after helping & watching the work, sweat and countless vounteers time that goes into Extreme Make-Over first hand…it’s just disresepctful to Ty and the Designers and many volunteers. The show receives over 1,000 requests a month for help. I would have liked ABC to purchase the home and find another family in need. I hope ABC will have future families sign an agreement to use the money donated the way it was inteneded. Lesson learned by everyone…
There are simply no words for these people…apart from greedy…2nd chances happen and should happen, however I do believe that these people need to go to counselling for their mismanagement and gambling problems and to pay back what they owe. Sad sad story.
Proverbs 28:20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that makes haste to be rich shall not be innocent.
Does this apply?
Hey, what did you expect.
I agree that the homes are always way over the top, regardless this family should have never been borrowing againist the home that was paid off anyways. Do yo understand what that means? All the money they make day to day is to pay for food, electric, water and so on, not rent or a house payment. If someone paid my rent for me as a single mother of four with NO child support and I am not on welfare of any kind. I would have alot of money left over. These people let this go to there head and took out a loan they wouldn’t be able to pay back. Comeon if they couldn’t afford it before the house how could they afford it now. I hope they get it taken away and I hope that they learn that when you are given something free and clear, be happy and don’t take advantage. You still have to work for a living. EXTREME MAKEOVER: LISTEN UP! YOU ARE JUST GIVING HOMES TO PEOPLE WHO DONT CARE AND WANT FREE STUFF. A SIMPLE FAMILY HOME IS FINE BUT YOU GUYS GO WAY TO FAR OVER THE TOPAND WITH ALL THE MONEY YOU USE TO MAKE ONE HOME YOU COULD HAVE BUILT 2 OR 3. BE WISE IN WHO YOU CHOOSE AND CHECK THERE CREDIT!!!! QUIT FEELING SORRY FOR PEOPLE WITH SICK CHILDREN WHO USE IT FOR AN EXCUSE. FOR THE FAMILIES WHO WERE DESERVING AND HONEST, YOU LIVE IN YOUR NEW HOME AND I WISH YOU ONLY THE BEST. YOU ARE THE ONES THIS SHOW WAS MEANT FOR!
