Index Shows Falling Home Prices, Rising Sales of Religious Statuettes
WSJ columnist June Fletcher reports:

With housing woes in the headlines daily, more people are asking for help from a higher power to sell their homes.
StJosephStatue.com, a Modesto, Calif., company that creates plastic statues that many believers in the powers of saints bury upside down in their back yards to help sell their homes, has released a new quarterly index comparing the company’s sales to the Case-Shiller Home Price Index, published by Standard & Poors. The index (click chart below to enlarge index) shows the correlation between sales of the statues and sales of homes in the country’s top 20 housing markets, from late 2005, when the housing market began to unwind, until spring 2008.
Not surprisingly, statue sales are doing best in places where housing prices have done the worst, and are on the rise in 17 of the 20 markets. (For more about St. Joe see our post St. Joseph’s to Work, Home Sellers Have to ‘Have Faith’)
Phil Cates, a mortgage broker who founded the statue company 17 years ago, won’t release annual revenue figures. But he says buyers of statues aren’t necessarily religious, even though St. Joseph is a Catholic saint.
In fact, statue sales are best in the south Atlantic region, which isn’t particularly a Catholic enclave — but is an area with sagging sales.
Customers spend $9.95 for a four-inch-high statue with plastic burial bag, muslin tote bag, and a color booklet explaining the tradition of burying the saint (patron of the family and household needs), which was begun hundreds of years ago in Europe by nuns. Although critics decry the front-yard burials as mere superstition, Mr. Cates says he has customers from all denominations — especially since he throws in a free home listing on his Web site for everyone who buys one of his kits. His best customers, particularly these days, are real estate agents. “They buy in bulk,” he says.
Kittens per acre must be coming up soon…Can’t wait. Sorry.
Statues? Is the WSJ having a hard time finding feel good real estate stories? How about facing reality that this market is in a free fall and that prices MUST lower another 50% in some markets before most negotiations should begin?
Well, I got a million dollar idea. Why not make Bernarke statuettes - “Help Him God to keep our ARM rates below CPI indices”.
I was a skeptic, but after I had a house for sale, in the Asheville NC area, for about 1.5 yrs,
a friend in FL, gave me the St. Joseph statue that had just sold their house in FL,
I planted St Joseph right side up, facing the front door, had an offer in 3 weeks, that I closed on in fall 06.
I passed the statue on to my parents, who had been trying to sell a lake house for 3 + yrs, they planted St Joseph in late spring 07, a buyer looked at the house around the 4th of July, initially said they were going to pass, and then came back in the fall, to buy.
So, who’s to say . . .
Yes, I also heard that tying up and burning a real estate agent also does the trick. Make sure to spread the ashes in the back yard. Especially those carrying blackberries - the devil’s mark.
Ridiculous!
In death we are told those who go to heaven are as angels. May St. Joseph and all the angels and saints intercede for us not only for houses that need to be sold but for all in financial straits.
JP Stpn2me and Alternate Reality, may God richly bless you and keep you, may He make His face to shine upon you and give you peace. May He enlighten your soul with knowledge of His Being. Bob, Pax.
Wow. Thanks RR. I will sacrificially slaughter a chicken as soon as I get home from work.
A fool and his money are easily parted.
RR: Which God? There are thousands across various religions/cultures. I bow to the Easter Bunny myself…
Well, time to convert to Hinduism and pray to the housing god. I guess he (she?) would be a subsidiary of Vishnu.
Just lower the asking price by $100,000.00 and see it move.
Well…that explains the St.Joseph card in the window of the house I’m renting. It had been on the market for a year before it was pulled. I rent for half the cost of owning that house, even at a current deflated (or “less inflated” I should say) price. Tucson median income: 30k and falling, so why $290k for a dumpy brick starter home surrounded by tumbleweeds and rusting el caminos? Oddly, there are very few homes for sale in the Mexican part of town (South Tucson), where prices didn’t inflate so insanely, and where the occupants’ approach to homedebt was apparently more measured. Who is the patron saint of greed? Try lighting that candle.
I understand people not having faith, but why must they make fun of people who do? Where is our respect for our fellow man? Or for God?
Here the old WSJ real estate blog lurker “Alternative Reality” spinning his baloney and then flaming anyone who disagrees with him. He and “Tucson Collapse” along with “Stpn2me” try and propagandize these blogs with their BS. Pay them no mind…
Mine sold in 2 weeks…not only did I bury St. Joe, I prayed for his intercession (lots of folks leave that important part out - St. Joe isn’t a rabbits foot, but he’s in with the big Guy)…you must pray with a firm belief and call on St. Joseph.
St. Joseph is a Catholic saint. I would suggest that people pray to him to intercede with God in their materials needs; but do not bury him. Burying the statue of any saint is a superitious act. Burying a saint does not honor the memory of the saint; on the contrary, it is disrespectful. Whether they are Catholic or not, real state agents ought to keep these facts in mind. Thanks!
hey Bob from NC:
we need a few thousands of those stautes of yours here in Florida.Send one to Bernanke also.Tha’s a funny story! Bob should take Bernanke’s place, we’ll do better! I can believe the WSJ is posting this!
I agree wholeheartedly with John R. I am a Catholic and believe that is gross disrespect for St. Joseph. Pray to him and ask his intercession. That is all that is needed, the rest is superstition, which is not part of Christianity.
Again, if ‘Sellers’ and their advisors lowered the retail or trade price for the used houses; then
They would not need this figurines.
Income x 3 is the amount of house a couple/individual can afford.
Banks are going to start reverting back to…used guessed it BANKS - yet again.
20%+ shall be the norm.
Bnaks shall have the debt service agreement on THEIR books (novel concept).
Households shall SAVE MONEY.
And - in the end (sorry sports fans) prices for used (85%) and new (15%) houses shall retreat.
Until then - just wait.
Remember…
The credit crisis was not one and shall be resolved by Oct ‘07 (Paulson)
Inflation is not a concern to us (Helicopter Ben, Oct ‘07)
Banks are well capitalized (Bear Stearns, a week before they were saved) AND 1 month before IndyBanc was dismissed.
Unemployment is only 5% (Labor Dept, all the time)
Houses (used and new) are great investments (NAR, 2006 - 2008).
Housing shall rebound in 2007 (just about everyone in the media).
In the end - ‘Sellers” should lower the price of their used houses to the level of used houses that have CLOSED (within the last 3 mos.) instead of marking them to the retail or listed nonsense.
And don’t buy the figurines - SAVE YOUR MONEY.
Realize we are truly in a war.
Show respect to prisoners, but show sense. Keep them locked up… humanely… for as long as necessary. Let them see family twice a year. Wish it could be easier but it is NOT. We are dealing with real enemies, even if the are not guilty of alleged crime, they are enemies … ones that are very unlikely to change.
However, if they do happen to change, long term and for real, then perhaps on some occasions they can be let go, but not allowed back into Iraq, but stay under surveliance on an island someplace, where they have to work to earn a living and they can be with family who will join them. We cannot keep them all locked up in jail forever.
sure satan already has your new home ready for you in Hell! lol!
From my own painful personal experience I can say that it does take Divine intervention to sell your house now; that and a very experienced realtor. Thank God we had both, or our house which we did not want to sell would have foreclosed. St. Joseph was our rock in discourangement and despair, and a great help. Don’t scoff at/scorn his readiness to help. I am very grateful to him and Our Lady(Guadalupe in particular) for their great help in avoiding an awful financial shipwreck. We’re still trying to hang in there. 2007 was not a fun year. Looking forward to better days. Thanks again to our Heavenly Help.

If this page is any indication, it’s no wonder this country is so messed up. People of faith thinking that St. Joseph has nothing better to do than help them unload their overpriced homedebt onto another victim. Tax the churches, please.
Being a cradle caholic, I was firmly opposed to that “sacriligious practice” of burying St. Joseph & would have no part of it while trying to sell Mom’s house 25 years ago. After 2 yrs on the market, I relented & it sold in 2 weeks.
In 2006,when the market was getting “iffy” and we were in need of selling…but not right away because the house we were building wasn’t ready yet…St. Joseph got buried right away & it was “miraculously” sold the day we were told we could move in the new house.
ST JOSEPH IS AN AWESOME SAINT.
Do you idiots actually think god gives a crap whether your house sells????? ROTFLMFAO…
give it ten to 12 yrs…and the Economy will be worse. As soon ot hits the bottom, no one will even notice, because after all growing will be veryyyyyy slowwwwww.And NO 401k’s, NO savings, no retiremnt plans or pensions for many in the Country.
“Baby Boomers” it’s going to be ugly! Just save your money and enjoy life! Do not buy! Wait!!!
NO college? Not a problem, go bag groceries so you can pay your basic bills. Many will have to work till they’re 95.
Many will have to go back to work for the min wage! Instaed of school kids working summer or evenings you’ll only see seniors bagging for you! If you think it’s bad now, just wait 12-12 more years and you will see!
none has the solution! promises…words, beautiful promises! Nice speeches.
They both just want to be president and both suck! The sad part is that one of those loosers is going to be our president. Future? Give me a break…none of them have the guts to make the right changes, moves or to make the right decisions for our country! One of them will have to be our president? we’re in trouble!!!
vote for Bernanke! he’s the BIGGEST IDIOT with the highest Education! The right man for…take your dog for a walk!
To RR 2:19.
Beautiful and in the future I would not cast my pearls before swine (a.k.a. Alternate Reality and cronies who are probably also fans of New Yorker cartoonist BEK)
This is sacrilegious, period, espeically for Catholics who should know better. I wish everyone who “plants” St. Joseph when they need a favor would spend the same amount of time honoring him for the great saint and FATHER OF THE FAMILY, that he is.
Faith in God’s providence is more than enough for any good soul. Anymore than “Catholics worships Saints”, this is another example of “willful ignorance.”
Save your $10 bucks, your soul, and develop a real devotion TO St. Joseph. In prayer, ask him to interced. In faith, and in faith ONLY, he will, if it’s God’s will.
Don’t be fooled by the “false angel of light” OR stories about nuns. Most of all, it’s a sin against the first commandment to treat a stature of St. Jospeh like a “good luck charm.”
Try pray, it works! (and it’s free).
Rita
This practice is not sacrilegious, it’s simply a way of asking St. Joseph to intercede in prayer for us to sell our home(s) and then THANKING him. My sister has moved 4, yes 4 times in the past 5 years, involving 3 states and has buried a St. Joseph statue and made the novena to St. Joseph each time and their homes have always sold within weeks! RECOGNIZE home sellers must also price right. Very simply: sale or no sale asking St. Joseph 1. Inspires hope
2. Hope brings about believing and 3. Believing leads to faith. Practical things must also be done like fix-ups and properly staging the home for sale. Also after the sale the statue is to be removed and the experience shared with others of how St. Joseph helped you personally. I sincerely hope this helps people to understand that this is not some sort of magic. It’s simply asking someone who is close to God to intercede for us. Much like we would ask a friend to pray for us if we had a serious illness or some other need.
We spent weeks and weeks looking for a new home, but we were very frustrated because we couldn’t find one we liked in our price range. Finally one morning, on the way to see our agent, my husband and I decided to ask St. Joseph for help. Sure enough, the very first house we saw that day was perfect for us. And the kicker is, our agent wasn’t even planning to show it to us, but at the very last minute she decided to add it to the list. My husband and I both believe St. Joseph interceded for us.
Thank you St. Joseph!
My wife followed the instructions (which includes pray, not just burying a statue) and our home sold for asking price. That was in Arvada, Colorado in 1995. The pray worked again in 2001 in a down market. Our house was in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.
St. Joseph is the father of the Holy Family and Jesus listens to him. Ask Joseph to help you and he will ask his Son Jesus for you. Have faith and hope!
Jeff in Los Alamos, New Mexico
Slap the bejesus out of yourselves and volunteer for the homeless instead of littering the terrain with plastic or plaster statues.
My opinion-DOW JONES,february 2009,8990 points.Thank you, Mr Bush and Mr Bernanke.
I would first give some hard earned money to the Church (the body of Christ ) via whatever means and then behold how one’s financial needs are met.
Get a grip !!
St. Joseph is my patron saint. When we put up our house for sale on our own, we put his statue in the front window. A short time later the house was sold above the asking price. In this time, this is a real miracle.
I believe the St. Joseph statue with the Devotional Prayers, for intercession helps the sale or rental of poperty. One does not need to bury the statue. Put it in the front closet or window of the home. That is what I have done and have had success. I think the idea of burying the statue, sounds superstitious. Magdalen Mauldin
I think in time of crisis everyone turns to a higher power. It’s just peculiar that we ask for help from a higher power when we’re in trouble, but don’t give anything back in time of our wealth!!!
I am a convert to the Catholic Faith and so grateful for all the saints that have gone before us to pray and interceed for us. Most people in America are greedy and self-centered and give very little back to God! Many only call on HIM in time of great need or emergencies. St. Joseph is the Protector of the Family and the Church so we all should pray for his help! It sure can’t hurt.
Don’t waste your TIME OR MONEY on figurines.
Just drop your price (significantly) OR don’t sell.
Quite easy!
My son had a boat that he bought with a friend and due to finances they had to sell. Many liked the boat but could not come up with financing for it for months. I gave him a statue of St. Joseph to put into the boat even though the boys figured it would not help and was superstitious. The boat sold in two weeks. They couldn’t thank St. Joseph and God enough.
After St. Joseph is buried and you pray for his intersetion and you sell your house you are to dig him up and put him in a place of honor in your new home. I did it. It really works.
If you people really - I mean truly believe this nonsense?
Then, where is the BUYING PATRON SAINT?
The one you place head up to acquire the house at the absolute right price?
Of course not - again b/c the media, NAR, and just about everyone else wants the buyers to be SUCKERS…
I think that everyone on this page that is making fun the Catholic faith should be ashamed of themselves. If this was a Muslim or Hindu issue, I very seriously doubt that anyone would be making these kinds of comments for fear of “offending” them and their religious beliefs. Well, guess what? Catholics can become offended to!! (I am VERY offended) The reason that we bury statues is because we are calling to mind the presense of St. Joseph by this act. We are actually doing something instead of just thinking it. (I wrote this to show that we DO NOT honor the statue itself.) I think that this is a wonderful way to spend your money, instead of spending it on ANOTHER POINTLESS sports game. For a closing comment, I would just like to say that I am EXTREMELY angered at these comments, especially the ones made by catholics. What you “Catholics” need to do is read up on basic Catholic theology. Oh, and by the way, Stpn2me, you ought to ask God for forgiveness for taking his name in vain. If he cares about lowly sparrows, he will care for you. Just look at what he did for us on calvary! he didn’t have to do that! he could have just said “To bad, you blew your chance. Now instaed of heaven, all good people will go to limbo.” (which is where all holy people went before Jesus died. It had everything except the presense of God.) So, if he cares that much about us (insignificant, ungrateful creatures that we are), I think that he would care if you were trying to sell your house without success.
Final comment? I am only 15 years old and I am not typing up hateful things like other people that I could mention are. Who is to say who is REALLY the adult?
We asked St. Joseph’s intercession is selling our home. We had two viewers, the second was from Las Vegas, and had seen our home on the internet. They bought it, for a very reasonable offer, even though it was in a flood zone, and we thought would be impossible to sell. Praise God and St. Joseph!
Isn’t it sad that a 15 year old has to show so many adults what Faith really is.
I agree with you Kristy and I am offended by these simple minded people putting down our Catholic religion. It is time we take a stand and speak out against these offenses before it is too late. God Bless You Kristy!!!

I too am angered by the nature that this discussion has taken. Christy could not be more right (or articulate!) in her post. God is one of my favorite fictional characters (a close third behind RoboCop and Balky from Perfect Strangers). Stop with all the negative comments because HE is watching. RoboCop that is.
this is hilarious, who knew that religious nuts trolled WSJ blogs…
St. Joseph is REAL and is READY to intercede to Our Father on our behalf. I have experienced many, many, real estate miracles with the help of St. Joseph. I really wish ignorant people would just listen to themsevles…so foolish. I will pray for you.
Do you really think St.Joseph wants to prop up inflated home values? What about the suckers who are dumb enough to buy inflated homes now? I guess they lit the wrong candle. This is spirituality? This is devotion, ME-generation style?Read your own comments people…it’s all about you, all the time, and you stand behind a plastic religious icon to sell your home and call it ‘faith’? “real estates miracles???” ugh…pass me a bucket…what folly.
St. Joseph is REAL and is READY to intercede to Our Father on our behalf.
Joseph was only a man. The only one that intercedes is Jesus talking to god to save your wayward souls. No one sits at the right hand of god other than Jesus. Joseph was a good guy, but only at the right place at the right time. Dig up your toys, lower your price, and your house will sell.
Oh, and by the way, Stpn2me, you ought to ask God for forgiveness for taking his name in vain.
Dude. All I did was say his name. I didnt call him a name, I didnt curse. Leave your religious finger wagging for catholics. I for one know who my god is, and I dont pray to graven images. Jesus was god incarnate, Joseph was just a man there watching the show….
To Those Outraged that a Catholic would repudiate burying statues of Saints to score a real estate deal, get real! For the poster claiming to be a 15-year-old convert, discuss it with your parish priest. I was raised within the Jesuit tradition. You can always pick us out of the crowd. We’re the one’s making the most noise. We march for freedom, against unjust wars, civil rights, etc… However, I wasn’t taught the “bury the saint get the $$$” sermon in my Catholic upbringing.
The God I believe in doesn’t help you sell unless you first have a fair asking price.
Jeebus help us all.
Did any of you beauties notice what the profession of the man who makes these statues really is ?
When we bought our home there was this weird upside down statue buried in the front yard. But he mysteriously disappeared when I put a mezzuzah on the door.
Bury a statue of me and the golden apples of Eris appear. All Hail Discordia, and send for your Dobbs statue today!
I don’t believe in God but if burying a cheap plastic statue in my yard helped sell my house I would do it without hesitation.
Hey, I buried a statue of The Flying Spaghetti Monster, but all I got were dogs digging holes looking for pasta.
St Joseph is the patron saint of the home(family) not the house. The house is just a physical structure but the home is a dwelling place of the family. burying St Joseph in the yard upside down not only symbolizes death but also makes a mockery of the saint and because he is in the communion of saints, this practice also makes a mockery of the death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ! This practice cannot come from God because God cannot be untrue to Himself. St Joseph should be placed in a prominent place in the home and venerated for the saint that he is. With the extreme chaos existing in the traditional family today, this would seem to be a higher priority than selling a house at the expense of disrespecting our dear St Joseph.
Judas Iscariot sold Our Lord for 30 pieces of silver and thought he was doing the right thing. Any time we place the temporal above the spiritual we place ourselves in spiritual danger. Is it God’s will for us to sell the house or does He have other plans for us at our current residence? We can never know God’s will if we make a mockery of those things that are holy!
It is interesting that praying to catholic saints was instituted in order to ease the conversion of polytheists in Europe and North Africa who were used to praying to a different god for each purpose. It was an expedient bow to polytheism in the early days of the church that still endures. Kind of how we still celebrate the pagan winter solstice as “Christmas” even though Jesus was born in March.
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Dialing For Dollars is trying to find me.
I wait for delivery each day until three,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a color TV ?
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
I’m counting on you, Lord, please don’t let me down.
Prove that you love me and buy the next round,
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a night on the town ?
Everybody!
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
I have a statue of St. Joseph in my house all the time. I would not bury him if I wanted to sell my house. I would do the novena, though, asking for his intercession. Then I would take the statue to my new home. I would honor him this way, as I always do.
It worked for me!! I got asking just before the market crashed.
Did any of you beauties notice what the profession of the man who makes these statues really is ?
I didn’t…
Phil Cates, a mortgage broker who founded the statue company 17 years ago
People say there is a sucker born every minute…But I think there is a special place in hell for those who pray on the faithful..but then again, whose fault is it when the faithful get scammed?
found a great place online to buy statutes
